Your Eminence Archbishop Demetrios,
Your Eminence Metropolitan Alexios,
Most Reverend Metropolitans of the Holy Eparchial Synod,
Beloved Children in the Lord,

Today, we are well pleased to bring glad tidings to this Holy Metropolis of Atlanta, to its esteemed Metropolitan, our beloved brother in Christ, Alexios, and to the faithful clergy and laity who work herein and support the various dynamic ministries of the Metropolis.

The tremendous growth of the Metropolis over the past decade; with new communities being founded, and a burgeoning populace of Orthodox faithful, testify to the providential care of His Eminence Alexios and to his co-workers here at the Metropolis Headquarters under the guidance and inspiration of His Eminence Demetrios, our Exarch in the U.S.A..

Truly, the Metropolis of Atlanta is being true to the Name of its Cathedral: the Annunciation of the Theotokos and Ever-Virgin Mary. For you are spreading the Good News of the salvation of all humankind, the same message that was brought to the Holy Virgin over two thousand years ago: The Lord is with us.

We remember with great fondness our previous visit to Atlanta some twelve years ago, our first visit to the United States as Ecumenical Patriarch. At that time, we had the opportunity to visit the tomb of the late Martin Luther King Jr., as well as Emory University, but not this facility established to be the headquarters of the Metropolis of Atlanta. We congratulate our beloved brother in the Lord, His Eminence Metropolitan Alexios, for his excellent stewardship in the creation of this center; and we extend as well our congratulations and thanks to all the donors, benefactors and pious faithful who labored to produce such a facility, as well as those who work herein for the good of the Church and for the glory of God.

We pray that our Good and Loving God may ever bless this center of faith and fellowship, and that He may bestow upon all who labor herein his abundant grace, and His infinite mercy.

Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew's message for World Environment Day

Tuesday, June 08, 2010

Inasmuch as, at the Ecumenical Patriarchate, we have long been concerned about problems related to the preservation of the natural environment, we have ascertained that the fundamental cause of the abuse and destruction of the world’s natural resources is greed and the constant tendency toward unrestrained wealth by citizens in so-called “developed” nations.
